The project is the joint effort of the Gujarat Forest Department and Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), supported by the Tata Chemicals Limited (TCL).

Garden will be called as Mithapur Coral garden and it will be the first of its kind in India.

This project was conceptualised in the 2006, after WTI got success in the initial experiments for conservation of the coral species at the proposed site which they think is fit to develop as coral garden.

Features of Mithapur Coral garden:
  • It will conserve several coral species at one place and to boost tourism in the state.
  • All the coral species found in Gulf of Kutch will be made available at one place.
  • Based on accessibility project reef will be separated into various sections.
  • In these sections tidal pools will be made in order to provide sustainable environment for corals.
  • Each pool will contain a variety of corals of different species.
  • It would be useful not only for education and tourism, but also for restoration of the reef.
  • Tourists will be able to watch the beauty of corals as the authorities plan to have wading, snorkeling, diving, representative pool, jetty and boat anchoring areas in it.
In India there are four major coral reef ecosystems:
  1. Andaman & Nicobar islands
  2. Lakshadweep islands
  3. Gulf of Mannar in Tamil Nadu
  4. Gulf of Kachchh in Gujarat.
